Overview

The Neurophysics group is studying the physical mechanisms underlying signal perception and transduction in the nervous system and applies experimental physics methods to problems in neuroscience.
Experiments are based on small animal models, mostly insects, which are studied by nonlinear optical techniques for non-invasive structural and functional imaging and by optogenetic tools for optical manipulation of perception and memory.

Research directions

  • Brain Network Dynamic. Study various forms of temporal coding, spike latencies, and oscillations;
  • Development of an all optical neuronal modulation and readout platform. Combining optogenetics and Calcium imaging in fruit flies, honey bees, and zebrafish models;
  • Neonicotinoid influence on the honeybee physiology. Study neurotoxic pesticide-induced structural and functional neuroplasticity and its influence on learning,behaviour, and social interaction;
  • Vision and magnetoreception in honeybees. Development of optical tools to image the visual information processing pathway in the honeybee and to study a potential quantum biological mechanism of magnetorecetion;
  • Structural and functional brain lateralization. Study asymmetries on all levels of the information processing pathway in the honey bee brain;
  • Quantum-biological vibration theory of olfaction. Studyisotope sensitivity of the olfactory sense to testa model for odour receptor interaction probing molecular vibrations.
